Press Release 2012 - Opening Shadowlife

Contemporary Aboriginal art on show in Bangkok

The Australian Embassy recently launched its latest exhibition of Australian art, Shadowlife, at Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (BACC). After Bangkok, the exhibition will travel to Taiwan and Singapore.

Mr Simon Farbenbloom, Deputy Head of Mission of the Australian Embassy, presided over the opening ceremony of the exhibition. The event started with a special performance by Visions of a Nomad, a trio group from Australia which plays cross-genre music featuring indigenous culture, and a floor talk by Shadowlife curator, Mr Djon Mundine OAM.

“The Australian Embassy is pleased to be able to celebrate with you, indigenous arts and culture which are pivotal components of Australia’s diverse society. We proudly present this exhibition to Thai people as part of our 60th anniversary celebration of Thailand-Australia diplomatic relations this year”, Mr Fabenbloom said.

Curated by Djon Mundine OAM and Natalie King, Shadowlife presents 48 photographs and eight moving image works of nine internationally-renowned indigenous and one non-indigenous Australian artists. The exhibition explores the notion of the shadow as a representation of our soul that can never leave us or exist independent of us.

Shadowlife was developed by Asialink and the Bendigo Art Gallery. It is supported by: the Australian Government through the Australian Visual Arts Touring Program of the Australia International Cultural Council, an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; the Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body; and The Visual Arts and Crafts strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory Governments.

The exhibition is on display until 29 April 2012 at BACC. BACC is open to the public and entry is free. Opening hours are 10am – 9pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Tel: 02 214 6630-1.
