Applications are invited for the position of Consular Assistant, Consular Section, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) at the Australian Embassy, Bangkok. The closing date for applications is Thursday, 21 September 2017, 4.30pm (Bangkok time).

The Consular Assistant plays an important role in delivering the work of the Consular section. The position provides assistance to the Consular team and assistance to Australians and their family members in circumstances such as hospitalization, arrest, death, welfare, whereabouts or crisis situations as well as passport and notarial services as required.

How to Apply

For any application to be ELIGIBLE and therefore considered, it must include the following:

  1. CV (Resume) - A maximum of two pages CV outlining previous relevant work experience in English language. Please include the names and contact details (phone number and email addresses) of two referees in the CV.
  2. A Statement of Claim addressing each selection criterion in no more than two pages in total. Tell us why you are the right person for the job.  We want to know why you are interested in working with us, what you can offer us, and how your skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications are applicable to a role at this level. Please provide examples to demonstrate your capability. Selection Criteria

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Applicants must provide a written Statement of Claims of no more than two pages to show their suitability under each of the following Selection Criteria. The Statement of Claims forms the most important part of the application, as this information, together with a CV of no more than two pages, will be used to shortlist applicants for further consideration for the vacancy.  There is no need for a covering letter.

In addressing each criteria please ensure that you provide example(s) based on previous experience where available, to demonstrate your capability.

  1. An ability to learn, interpret and implement instructions and guidelines.
  2. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively under pressure and to use initiative and good judgement to resolve problems.  Experience working in a team in a cross cultural environment.
  3. Experience in providing courteous, effective and helpful assistance to clients in a customer service environment. Demonstrated ability to resolve situations with difficult clients.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills, think creatively and work in a team environment;.
  5. Good English and Thai written and oral communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  6. Demonstrated administrative skills, including the ability to prepare written reports, account for finances, and flexibility in managing multiple tasks.
  7. Experience working in a diplomatic mission, with the Thai government, in the travel industry would be an advantage.

As soon as possible, subject to the Thai Police Check Process which can take up to six weeks

Employment will be subject to a satisfactory medical and police/security checks. The actual start date will be confirmed after advice has been received in regards to the outcome of the police checks which will be carried out in Thailand, Australia, any country where the successful candidate is a citizen, and any country where the successful candidate has resided for 6 months or more in the past 5 years. Please note that costs for police check in any country other than Thailand will be met by the successful candidate.

For expatriate prospective employees, please note that all costs associated with the employee’s relocation to and stay in Thailand, including visa fees, are the employee’s responsibility. The Embassy can provide limited assistance to the employee requesting a Thai visa and permit to stay.  It is the employees’ responsibility to obtain the relevant documents and ensure that they are in compliance with immigration regulations that relate to their employment with the Embassy in Thailand. The Embassy is unable to assist with Thai Visa matters in relation to the spouse or partner or family members of an employee.
