AUSTRALIAN POLICY: PEOPLE SMUGGLING
Australia and Papua New Guinea have announced a new agreement to tackle people smuggling and reduce the number of lives lost at sea. Asylum seekers who arrive in Australia by boat without a visa will not be settled in Australia, but will instead be transferred to Papua New Guinea for assessment. Genuine refugees will then be permanently re- settled in Papua New Guinea, which is a signatory to the United Nations Refugees Convention. Australia remains committed to a humanitarian intake of around 20,000 people a year.
