19 August - World Humanitarian Day (WHD)
“The Australian Government, via AusAID will provide $405 million in global humanitarian funding in 2012. This funding will help 30 million vulnerable people around the world by providing life-saving assistance in conflict and crisis situations. On World Humanitarian Day Australia remembers the sacrifice of those 22 humanitarian workers tragically killed on this day in 2003 and recalls, since then, the many extraordinary examples of humanitarianism set by those like Sergio Vieira De Mello. We salute this year’s theme ‘people who help people’ and call on all global citizens to today get behind humanitarian workers with a simple act of assistance to people.”
