Press Release 2016 - Consul in Samui

Appointment of Honorary Consul in Koh Samui

25 August 2016

The Australian Government has appointed Ms Heather Reid as its new Honorary Consul resident in Koh Samui with jurisdiction throughout Surat Thani.

Nearly nine hundred thousand Australians visit Thailand every year with many holidaying in Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Ms Reid’s appointment will help the Australian Government to continue delivering high quality consular services to Australians in Koh Samui and the province of Surat Thani.

Australia and Thailand have a strong relationship based on shared interests and strong people-to-people links. The two countries work closely together in regional and international forums, and on a range of important issues including defence, law enforcement, counter-terrorism, and combatting people smuggling and human trafficking. Thailand is our eighth largest trading partner and Australia’s fifth largest source of international students.

Ms Reid is an Australian citizen who has lived in Koh Samui for over six years. She has a comprehensive background in healthcare services, including occupational therapy, counselling and rehabilitation and has worked extensively in adult education.  Ms Reid holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy, a Graduate Diploma in Health Education, and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning.

Ms Reid replaces Mr Kenneth Cheung who has provided outstanding service to Australia and its people during his tenure as Honorary Consul in Koh Samui since 2003.
