Cancellation of ANZAC Day commemorations in Kanchanaburi, Thailand
19 March 2020
ANZAC Day occurs annually on 25 April, Australians and New Zealanders recognise this day as an occasion of national commemoration.
The New Zealand and the Australian Embassies, the Royal Thai Armed Forces Development Command and Kanchanaburi Governor’s Office jointly host the Anzac Day commemoration in Kanchanaburi province, Thailand annually on 25 April. Australians and New Zealanders recognise this day as an occasion of national commemoration.
Unfortunately, given the global COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers have decided to cancel this year’s events and in addition this has resulted in the temporary closure of the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre for an indefinite period. These decisions are consistent with both Thai and Australian preventative measures.
The organisers thank all stakeholders who have been supportive of the commemorative events, and hope that the COVID-19 crisis will be resolved quickly and we may once again be in a position to hold the services in April 2021.
