Press Release 2021 - STEM workshop

Australian Embassy promotes STEM learning through
                                                    Hands-on Science Workshop

22 July 2021

The Australian Embassy sponsored STEM education workshops for Thai teachers and practitioners in the year 2021.

The Australian Embassy in Thailand has a long history of collaborating with Thailand on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. This year, due to the pandemic, the Embassy co-hosted the Virtual Hands-on Science Workshop series with the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) and Goethe Institute. STEM Education is popular in both Australia and Thailand for its innovative approaches to teaching and learning integrated bodies of knowledge with a focus on hands-on experiences.

Dr Stuart Kohlhagen, an Australian and the founder of The Science Nomad – a project aimed at supporting educators and learners by using humble materials to provoke powerful learning experiences in STEM – led the workshops. Dr Kolhagen had been working with Questacon - the National Science and Technology Centre in Canberra, Australia for over 35 years.

In his opening remarks at the workshop, Ambassador McKinnon emphasized the Embassy's and Thailand's long history of collaboration on STEM education. “The recent Southeast Asia Digital STEM Platform Workshop Series facilitated dialogues between STEM teachers from Southeast Asian countries, so they could exchange ideas and collaboratively develop resources in support of innovative STEM teaching.”

The workshops were held on June 8 and July 22 to commemorate World Ocean Day and World Brian Day, respectively. The workshops were made available to the public via IPST Facebook Live and will continue to be available online on the Facebook page and website of IPST.
