Press Release 2023 - Anzac

The Australian and New Zealand Embassies co-host
2023 Anzac Day Commemorative Service in Kanchanaburi

25 April 2023

25th April marks Anzac Day, a day when Australians and New Zealanders recognise the generations of service personnel who have endured wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations and remember those who have died. It was on this day in 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, as part of a larger Allied Force.

To commemorate Anzac Day this year, over 800 people gathered at the 2023 Anzac Day Commemorative Service at the Hellfire Pass in Kanchanaburi to pay tribute to the sacrifice of those who have dedicated themselves to both Australia and New Zealand. Also in attendance were the Hon Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs; Air Vice-Marshall Darren Goldie AM CSC, Air Commander Australia, alongside the Australian and New Zealand Ambassadors to Thailand.

HE Mr Jonathan Kings, Ambassador of New Zealand to Thailand and host of this year’s ceremony, said:

Today all New Zealanders and Australians remember those who gave up their lives so that we may live in peace. We are reminded of their sacrifice. We acknowledge the importance of caring for our returned service personnel, and we recognise our responsibility to care for the families of those who have died.

Anzac Day is a time for all Australians and New Zealanders to recognise the more than 1.5 million service men and women who have served our countries in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations, and a time to remember the more than 100,000 Australians and New Zealanders who sacrificed their lives in our countries’ name.
