Thai Kitchen to the World Culinary Exchange brings Australian students to learn authentic cooking skills in Thailand
29 November 2013
Today, the Australian Ambassador to Thailand, Mr James Wise hosted a luncheon at his residence to welcome Brianna Crowley and Dana Gleeson, Year-12 Australian students from Guilford Young College who have travelled from Australia, to spend one week learning Thai cooking skills at Suan Dusit International Culinary School, Bangkok.
The visit is a return leg of the ‘Thai Kitchen to the World Culinary Exchange, a collaborative project initiated by Guildford Young College in Tasmania, Mr Abhirat Achalabun, Honorary Consul-General of Thailand in Tasmania and the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra.
At the reception, the two students cooked an internationally famous Thai Massaman curry using Australian beef and potatoes, available at Thai supermarkets, and showed how Australian produce combined with Thai ingredients can create tantalising dishes.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra launched ‘Thailand: Kitchen to the World’ event during her official visit to Australia in 2012. The ‘Thai Kitchen to the World Culinary Exchange’ is a unique project, part of this initiative. The first part of the project commenced in August this year when three Thai chefs from Suan Dusit International Culinary School and Chiangrai Rajabhat University visited Tasmania. They delivered classes to approximately 300 school students and to apprentice chefs.
This week in Thailand, the two talented Australian students will make the most of this lifetime opportunity learning Thai culinary and cooking techniques as well as the Thai culture, and build an international network of friends and colleagues.
Brianna Crowley and Dana Gleeson recently completed their Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations). Both students will start apprenticeships in Australia upon return from Thailand and bring valuable international experience to their roles.
