A public forum on ASEAN-Australia Relations in Asia’s Transformation
to mark the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia relations

As part of the 40th anniversary of ASEAN - Australia relations commemoration this year, the Australian Embassy, Bangkok, and the Institute of Security and International Studies (ISIS) at Chulalongkorn University will organise a public forum titled “ASEAN-Australia Relations in Asia’s Transformation” on Thursday 17 July 2014, from 08.30 - 11.30 am at the Chumbhot-Pantip Conference Room, 4th Floor Prajadhipok-Rambhaibarni Building, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University.

The forum will feature prominent speakers on ASEAN issues including one of Australia’s leading experts in international relations, and particularly on Thailand and Myanmar, Dr John Blaxland. He is a Senior Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at Australian National University. Dr Blaxland writes about military history, intelligence and security and Asia-Pacific affairs. He was Australia’s Defence Attaché to Thailand and Burma from 2008-2010. Other prominent speakers at the forum include Mr Kavi Chongkittavorn, Senior Fellow at ISIS Thailand; Mr Umesh Pandey, Editor of the Bangkok Post’s Asia Focus; and Ms Gwen Robinson, Senior Fellow at ISIS Thailand and Senior Asia Editor at Nikkei Asian Review. Associate Professor Dr Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Director of ISIS Thailand, will be the moderator.

HE Mr James Wise, Australian Ambassador to Thailand, and Professor Dr Supachai Yavaprabhas, Dean of Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University will preside over the opening of the forum. The forum will examine the broader regional landscape and tease out its dynamics and contours that impinge on ASEAN and Australia and ASEAN-Australia relations.
