About the Department of Home Affairs
The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for central coordination, and strategy and policy leadership, in relation to Australia's federal law enforcement, national and transport security, criminal justice, cyber and critical infrastructure resilience and security, emergency management, multicultural affairs, and immigration and border-related functions, working together to keep Australia safe.
The Department of Home Affairs in Mekong Region focuses on delivering departmental priorities, including strengthening the cohesiveness of Australian society through our migration and temporary visa programs, assisting those people participating in humanitarian and refugee programs, strategic engagement and capacity building with host governments.
About the position
The Regional Support Officer works collaboratively with the Regional Executive Officer (REO) to support the Minister-Counsellor who performs the role of Regional Director Mekong Region, with responsibility for Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. As Regional Support Officer, you will support teams across the region to deliver multiple projects with tangible outcomes on an ongoing basis.
The role supports strategic projects across Home Affairs’ Mekong responsibilities, with particular focus on immigration and strategic engagement. It involves planning, reporting, stakeholder engagement, and contributing to regional initiatives that strengthen capability and compliance.
The job holder will work flexibly to provide executive support to the RD, undertake a range of administrative, coordination and reporting tasks on behalf of the Mekong regional office, including assisting with training coordination to ensure Home Affairs Mekong maintains a fully trained and knowledgeable workforce. This role requires the highest level of discretion in dealing with operational information from across the Mekong region.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Under broad direction from the RD and REO, support the development and delivery of Home Affairs’ corporate priorities in Mekong.
- Build and maintain positive professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Interpret and apply policies, provide comprehensive advice, support and resolution of issues.
- Manage the logistics and administration underpinning the effective and efficient operations of the Regional Director’s Office ensuring compliance with Home Affairs and DFAT policies and processes including accurate record keeping, payment processing and acquittal of expenses.
- Organise and manage the Regional Director’s schedule, including arranging meetings and appointments with high-level government officials, representational programs and travel planning.
- Assist in the management, delivery and evaluation of projects across the region.
- Support the Mekong office in organising complex visit programs for senior officials, stakeholder events and staff training programs, including with value-for-money assessment of quotes and vendor management.
- Contribute to regional corporate and strategic documents, including undertaking research, preparing materials and information for reports, and coordinating communications to support regional strategic planning.
- Support Home Affairs operations and teams in the Mekong Region through duties as directed by the RD and/or REO.
Required qualifications/experience/knowledge/skills

- High-level analytical, critical thinker, and problem solver who can find best-fit solutions within constraints.
- Outstanding prioritisation skills and initiative.
- Proven ability to work independently and be accountable your work output.
- Strong English language skills, both written and verbal, and highly developed liaison and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to undertake research, collate data and compile reports.
- Trustworthy with a strong capacity to exercise discretion, integrity and sound judgement in handling confidential information.
- Excellent ICT skills, particularly with using contemporary applications including software such as Microsoft Office.
