‘URBAN TEMPLATES’
An innovative Thai-Australian performance in Bangkok
9 June 2015
Prominent young Australian and Thai artists will present the innovative contemporary dance performance ‘URBAN TEMPLATES’, with the support of the Australia - Thailand Institute (ATI), in Bangkok on 19, 20 and 21 June.
URBAN TEMPLATES is a double bill contemporary dance performance examining our interaction within urban landscapes. Award-winning Australian choreographer James Batchelor developed ‘METASYSTEMS’ during his ATI Artists in Residency. Thai choreographer and Australian alumnus Navinda Pachimsawat Vadtanakovint developed ‘FRACTALS’, with the support of an ATI grant.
During his five-week residency in Bangkok, Batchelor documented processes taking place at construction sites. The result is METASYSTEMS - an observation of rapidly evolving urban landscape, with eight Thai and Australian performers constructing and assembling and 512 concrete bricks in mesmerising patterns and rhythms.
In ‘FRACTALS’, Navinda combines dance, installation and sound design. Through the construction of uniform geometrical structures on stage, Navinda explores repetitive patterns in human behaviour and social norms. The work portrays machine-like ways of living and the constant attempt to achieve perfect standardised form.
