The Australian Embassy Thailand, in collaboration with curator Jakub Mazerant of IllustrateYourLife, is pleased to present “The Australian Comics – Promoting Culture through Visual Story Telling” exhibition in Thailand.

The exhibition is free, and open to the public at ‘The Gallery’ on the third floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre from 15 – 27 March 2022 (Tuesdays to Sundays) from 10.00am – 19.00pm.

The Australian Comics exhibition has come to Thailand after touring Germany and Poland. It showcases some of the best and most original comic art from ‘the Land Down Under’.

The exhibition features 33 Australian prolific cartoonists and illustrators, including cartoonists Bruce Mutard, manga-style artist Queenie Chan, and Zen Pencils’ blog artist Gavin Aung Than.

This exhibition will promote a greater understanding of Australian arts and culture in Thailand, especially by reaching out to younger generations. It introduces artists’ original styles and approaches, while highlighting Australia’s diversity and multiculturalism.

The opening reception took place on Tuesday, followed by a panel discussion with Australian cartoonist Ben Mitchell, exhibition curator Jakub Mazerant, Bangkok-based Nicolas Verstappen who is a Chulalongkorn University professor and author of The Art of Thai Comics, and Thai cartoonist Thanis Weerasakwong, best known under his moniker Sa-Ard. The discussion ignited a creative dialogue between Thailand and Australia on how comic art is represented.

Australian Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mr Allan McKinnon remarked, “I am delighted to welcome the Australian Comics exhibition to Thailand as part of celebrations this year to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and Thailand. I hope visitors will enjoy learning about this unique Australian art form and get to know more about Australian arts and culture.

“We are truly excited to present the largest exhibition of Australian comics yet, here in Bangkok. We believe that the show will ignite new creative relations and future collaboration opportunities for Australian and Thai artists.” Jakub Mazerant said.
