Australian Embassy presents “Fractured Galaxy” at Chiang Mai Design Week 2025

8 December 2025

The Australian Embassy Thailand is in Chiang Mai Design Week 2025 by exhibiting the work of Australian visual artist, Giles Ryder, through his neon installation Fractured Galaxy.

Australian Deputy Head of Mission Andrew Egan said, “Chiang Mai Design Week is a vibrant festival that celebrates creativity and innovation. This is the first time Australia has participated, and we’re delighted to share Giles’ work with audiences in northern Thailand.”

The theme of this year’s Chiang Mai Design Week is ‘Local plus’. Mr Ryder has lived and worked in Thailand for over 12 years. His projects, often using industrial materials such as aluminum, mirrors and high finish lacquer have featured in more than 25 exhibitions globally.

Mr Ryder said, “I’m grateful to collaborate with the Australian Embassy for this display in Chiang Mai. I love combining light, materials and experiential space together and hope to spark dialogue on reconnecting human experiences in an increasingly digital world.”

Fractured Galaxy is constructed with neon tubes, transformers, steel and Perspex. Mr Ryder said it dynamically responds to the architectural and cultural contexts of Thailand and beyond, presenting what he describes as a “loose, abstract, cartoon-like galaxy”.

The installation is on display from 6-14 December 2025 at HAAN Studio, 144 Charoen Muang Rd, Wat Ket, Chiang Mai.

The installation is also one of the selected stops on the Chiang Mai Design Week visitor guide for souvenir stamps.

Chiang Mai Design Week is in its 11th edition, organised by the Creative Economy Agency – Northern Regional Office.
