24 January 2025
Australian Ambassador to Thailand Dr Angela Macdonald PSM hosted hundreds of guests for a celebration of Australia Day at The Ritz-Carlton Bangkok on 23 January 2025.
Guests of Honour for the evening were General His Highness Prince Chalermsuk Yugala, Privy Councillor Dr Chirayu Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, Justice Minister Police Colonel Tawee Sodsong and Education Minister Police General Permpoon Chidchob. The celebration was the first national day event at the hotel, and highlighted the enduring partnership between Australia and Thailand, which has flourished over 73 years.
Ambassador Macdonald reflected on Australia’s history and culture, and highlighted key individuals and achievements that have contributed to our modern and multicultural nation. She referenced Australian of the Year nominees, and people who have also contributed towards the bilateral relationship and broader region.
“We celebrate more than 60,000 years of indigenous Australians’ connection to country and to culture, and the diverse, multicultural country we have become through immigration,” she said.
“Australia Day is an opportunity for us to acknowledge our fellow citizens who take responsibility, and act, to make our world better.”
Ambassador Macdonald thanked Australian and Thai sponsors for their generous event contributions: ANCA, BlueScope, Blackmores, Charoen Pokphand Foods, Kingsgate Consolidated Limited, Meat and Livestock Australia, McGuigan, Penfolds, RMA Group, Supalai Public Company Limited and Thai Beverage.
Local singers Juliana Sutanto and Pimpaya Uamsri performed famous Australian songs including “Absolutely Everybody” and “You're the Voice”.
Guests also enjoyed an array of fresh Australian produce and wine, including beef, lamb, cheese, Tasmanian oysters and salmon.
