MEDIA RELEASE

8 May 2015

VISIT TO THAILAND

I will visit Thailand on 8 May to take forward Australia’s extensive interests with an important regional partner.

Australia and Thailand have a strong relationship based on shared strategic and economic interests.

I will meet Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn to discuss our bilateral relationship. I will reiterate Australia’s support for Thailand’s return to democracy and the importance of protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms.

My visit is an opportunity to boost Australia’s cooperation with Thailand on regional security issues, including defence, law enforcement, counter-terrorism and combatting people smuggling and human trafficking. I will also discuss how Australia and Thailand can enhance our engagement in regional forums, including the East Asia Summit.

I will be meeting Thai business leaders to identify ways we can increase our trade and investment links. Thailand is our ninth largest trading partner and an important investor in Australia.

I will also launch the New Colombo Plan in Thailand. This is an exciting opportunity for Australian students to live and study in Thailand. It is an investment in our future bilateral relationship as young Australians learn and build links for the future.

While in Bangkok, I will meet former prime ministers Yingluck Shinawatra and Abhisit Vejjajiva. I will also hold discussions with prominent female leaders to reiterate Australia’s support for women’s empowerment in our region.
